Pharmacist Kicks Ass

From an ABC Action News report out of New Port Richey, Fl, one bad-ass pharmacist fights back against an armed robber -
According to New Port Richey police, Ian McCain walked into the Money Saver Pharmacy Monday and pulled out a gun. With the gun pointed at him, pharmacist Snehal Patel said he stayed clam and looked for the right moment to fight back.
Patel told us people should know better than to mess with his pharmacy. He’s got tight security and said about 80 people have been arrested for trying to bring in fraudulent prescriptions. He hopes this latest attempt will be a lesson for everyone else.
Guess what the robber wanted? Yep, that’s right.. oxycodone. The robber got antsy when there wasn’t enough, and that’s when the fight started. Luckily, no one was seriously hurt, and the robber was apprehended. Here’s the video -
It’s getting seriously dangerous in the community pharmacies if you ask me. Just yesterday there was another incident where an Arkansas Pharmacist Says He Shot Suspect In Self-Defense.
A recent WLKY.com news link out of Louisville, KY reports that pharmacists are so concerned that drastic measures are being considered. Personally, I wonder what type of impact increasing security measures will have on the provision of MTM services?

What if laughter could be bought? Would you buy it?
A stoic man is afraid that he is unable to laugh at his upcoming date, so he purchases a bottle of ‘Laughter” from the local pharmacy. A single pill will let him laugh at the first thing anyone says, but will it save his day?

There’s that pharmacy theme again. You gotta admit, Lawrence Chen is a genius at filmography, and he just graduated from college only a year ago.
The Black Terror

As I wrote in my last post, Side Effects – Insomnia, there was one small, but subtle, aspect of the film which makes me think that the creator of the short film, Lawrence Chen, must be related to a pharmacist, or has at least been exposed to the profession.
What aspect would that be? It’s simple. Alex Powers, the main character in Side Effects, was reading a superhero comic book entitled “The Black Terror“.
Why would Lawrence choose this comic book superhero over any other comic book superhero? Because The Black Terror was the only American comic book superhero who was also a pharmacist. Lawrence must have know this before making the choice to use it in his film. He wanted a pharmacist hero.
The Black Terror was a comic book superhero who first appeared during the golden age of comic cooks, and lasted from January 1941 until late 1949.
Some would also consider this period the “golden age of pharmacy”, a time before pharmaceutical manufacturers became prolific and when the corner pharmacy was a community space where neighbors, politicians and even teenagers networked, exchanged gossip and built community relationships.
Pharmacists were held in high regard and considered an integral part of the community back then, before insurance companies took control of healthcare and chain pharmacies ruled the continent. The Black Terror was one of the most popular superhero characters of that time.
Pharmacist Bob Benton was The Black Terror, who got his super powers the same way many other old-time superheroes did — by ingesting a substance which we would nowadays call a drug. In his case, it was “formic ethers“, which he’d been experimenting with in his spare time. Breathing them gave him super strength, advanced agility and stamina, healing powers, and toughened his skin to the point where bullets would bounce off harmlessly – much like many of today’s thick-skinned community pharmacists.
And since practically every comic book superhero in those days had a young sidekick, he gave the same treatment to his pharmacy assistant, Tim Roland, who wore an identical costume in action. Collectively, they were known as The Terror Twins – champions of justice and democracy, fighting criminals and the Axis powers supposedly like today, for just $4.00 per prescription.

This is really an entertaining short film. Lawrence Chen must be related to a pharmacist, or have some exposure to the profession, as the film has one subtle aspect that most non-pharmacist viewers wouldn’t catch.
I’ll explain more in my next blog post.
