Just a little disclosure here. While I think this video is funny, I actually support our new immigration law (pdf), and think it’s detractors are blowing things way out of proportion.

They say a picture is worth one-thousand words, so here’s a link to a Gary Varvel editorial cartoon that pretty much describes my feelings about Arizona’s new identification law, and the people who think it will lead to Nazi-like racial profiling.

SALT LAKE CITY – A total of 158 gang members and individuals with gang ties, including many with prior criminal records, are facing new criminal charges or deportation following a four-month, multi-agency anti-gang surge spearheaded by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) that represents the largest operation of its kind ever carried out in the state.

This crime occurred just down the street from where I live -

On 08/20/2010, Phoenix police officers responded to a call about a possible fight about 4 a.m. Friday morning at a home near 27th Street and Indian School Road. Officers found a broken arcadia door in the back of the home. The officers went into the home for a welfare check on the occupants.

Detectives from the drug enforcement and home invasion/kidnapping enforcement units were called and assisted in the investigation because officers suspected the house was the scene of a home invasion and drug rip-off.

On 08/24/2010, PHOENIX – A total of 102 individuals with ties to 19 different street gangs are facing criminal charges or deportation following a six-day, multi-agency enforcement action in Phoenix and Yuma, Ariz. spearheaded by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Office of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

Twenty-six of the gang members and gang associates arrested during the operation are U.S. citizens. The remaining 76 individuals are foreign nationals.

Incidents like this sure makes “asking for papers” seem insignificant, and justified.
